Most houseplants die from the roots up, usually from too much water and too little air. Every GardenNova mix is built around three jobs that soil has to do well.
Roots breathe. Coarse ingredients such as bark and perlite keep small gaps open in the mix, so oxygen reaches the roots even after watering.
Extra water has to leave quickly. Fast-draining mixes protect succulents, orchids and other plants that rot when their roots sit wet for days.
Between waterings the mix should hold just enough water and food for the plant to use. Thirstier plants get a more moisture-holding blend.
